Fully Committed-Yes Again!

So, my weight loss journey has been a roller coaster ride. I keep having highs and lows. I’m off then back on. Well, this time I have made a serious commitment to stay on track. I have been logging on myfitnesspal.com and tracking my food intake as well as exercise. I also joined a group on facebook called “Commit to Fit” where I have vowed to eat healthy and complete at least 4 workouts a week.

I’ve cleaned out my closet, which depressed me with how small I had gotten 4 years ago and gained all the weight back. I’ve also been looking through the pictures of me on my birthday 4 years ago wearing my first Twilight shirt. I looked so good there! I want to get back in that Twilight shirt!

So far, I’ve done really well. I probably won’t be able to log on here every day, but I’ll try to update y’all every so often. Tomorrow is my first weigh in and I’m hoping to actually see some progress.

I passed the tests today by not touching the Krispy Kreme doughnuts that were brought to the office as well as ice cream sandwiches that are in the freezer. At work it’s employee appreciation week so I will be tempted with treats all week..oh I hope this doesn’t kill me. 😉 At least Friday for the big employee appreciation lunch we are doing fajitas which I can still make a healthy meal out of!

I have shocked myself here lately with how I can make healthy choices. I went hiking this past weekend, I went and walked the “big dam bridge” -yes that’s what it’s called. 🙂

I’ve lost weigt before so I know I can do it again. Y’all hang in there with me. I promise to stay on track this time!

I was surprised with the roses, bear, and balloon for my birthday. I was’t expecting anything since my husband was overseas. But, being the awesome man he is..he made sure this was delivered. It makes me smile every time I think about this day. Have I mentioned how much I love my husband?!

But, I want to get back to the picture above where I’m all smiles again. 🙂

“I’m a Sugar Whore”

In the words of a co-worker, “I’m a sugar whore”. I know my co-worker was trying to be funny and it is, but yet so true. I just might as well claim to be a food whore, lets not restrict it to just sugar. 😉

I have a serious problem with saying no. And, now that my friend is pregnant, it’s like I’m just eating along with her for no real reason…ugh! I had my lunch, was not hungry at all and someone brought cake. She wanted me to go with her, but of course, I cut myself a slice to with plenty of icing. Now, I feel like poo from the sugar crash.

So, looking in the mirror today and facing the facts, it’s almost like an alcoholic at AA, “Hi, my name is Charity and I’m a food whore”. From now on when someone offers me cake and I know I don’t need it and I’m not hungry..I will say to myself, “No, I will not be a food whore; I will keep my mouth closed” 🙂 Thanks to my co-worker for this amusing yet so true realization…

Learning to Love Myself

In honor of Valentine’s Day, I thought I would make a post about love. 🙂 Yes, totally cliché, but hey, my name even means love, so here we go.  I have a wonderful husband and I know he loves me as much as I love him. I just have a problem with loving myself as much as I love my husband. I do not loathe myself. I do have qualities about myself that I do love. But, I’m trying to learn to really love myself again.

When I really loved myself, I was so confident, happy, adventurous, fun to be around, etc. I’m starting to get some of these back, but they’ve been lost for a while now. I’ve felt just kind of stuck in this unhealthy boring rut in life. I’ve been at the same job, and though I work for an awesome company the work tends to get monotonous. And then I just didn’t want to cook so we were eating out a lot or I’d just pick up something on the way home-not healthy at all.

But, the tides have changed. It’s been a lot easier to eat healthier now that my hubby has committed to becoming a vegetarian. It helps me to eat more vegetables and fruit and less meat. I’ve gotten now to where I really only eat meat on the weekends and that is my “splurge” now, instead of the high carb, fried foods that I “cheated” with on the weekends. 🙂

I’ve still got a long ways to go to be at my healthiest. I know I need to step up my exercise and get active again. I have a wonderful co-worker that is going to let me borrow Turbo Jam, so I’m pretty excited about that. I’m hoping to get started later this week with that program in preparation for when I’m able to get Turbo Fire, which also looks like a lot of fun.

I’m starting to feel better about myself and excited to see what all I can accomplish.  I love my valentine very much and I want to love myself so I can be the happy confident loving woman he fell in love with. I hope everyone else has a Happy Valentine’s Day!

Do you know where your food comes from?!

My morning started off with me checking my Facebook, and a local farmer posted a link to a news article from 2003 on research of cloned animals in the meat industry. This caught my attention. I knew there were serious issues with the meat industry in the U.S. But, never had cloning crossed my mind. I soon began doing further research and reading other articles on both sides of this topic.  Quite frankly, I am deeply disturbed by this information. Here is a compilation of research I have found so far on this subject. I will list the websites from which this information came at the end of this document.

“Are You Eating Cloned Meat”-This article describes the many aspects of the cloned meat industry. The history of cloning animals began with the first cloned tadpole in 1952. In 1996 Scotland successfully cloned a sheep named Dolly from adult DNA. Though according to another article, “Clone on the Range”- “Dolly died from lung disease in 2003. By then, the hysteria and hype had faded and cloning had largely disappeared from the headlines. In the scientific world, however, the quest to perfect the techniques, and to profit from it, was just getting started.” The patents used by a Scottish biotech company to clone Dolly were then sold to ViaGen in 2003. Here is a chart trying to explain cloning:

The FDA’s stance in 2001 was to not allow cloned meat into the food supply. However, in 2006 the FDA stated that they did not find any dangers in cloned meat, but they asked manufacturers not to introduce into the markets just yet, though this was never enforced or regulated. Therefore the milk and other byproducts from cloned or genetically engineered animals could have been sold as far back as 2006. The FDA just looked at cloning as a “breeding option rather than food for the market option”. Their “studies” was on a “well it looks the same as normal bred animal meat, therefore it should be the same strategy”. In 2008, the FDA released a statement that the food from cloned cattle, swine, and goats were safe and would not require labeling. Of course, the biotech and meat industries are against labeling it, because it will “cause undo concern for consumers”. Arguments against labeling have also been the cost it would take to identify and track cloned animal sources.  But is it really unnecessary concern?

The Center for Food Safety argued against the decision of not labeling cloned food sources. The FDA in return released a 678 page risk assessment stating that “meat and milk from clones of cattle, swine, goats, and the offspring of clones from any species traditionally consumed as food, are as safe to eat as food from conventionally bred animals”. I thoroughly agree with a quote from one article, “Essentially the government is being dominated by the very industries that they are meant to be regulating.” The EGE-European Group on Ethics in Science and New Technologies studied the cloning of animals and found that “fewer than 5% of cloned fetuses live long enough to be born; roughly 20% of new born clones don’t survive the first 24 hours, and an additional 15% die before weaning.” In the cases of cows and sheep should the clone actually be born there is a very high risk of “large offspring syndrome” in which the animal may be born with extremely large organs, malformed limbs, and dysfunctional immune systems. There have also been cases reported that cloned and genetically engineered animals have been born inside out. There are other concerns that cloned and GE (genetically engineered) animals bring to the table, literally-no pun intended. “The National Research Council noted there other areas of food safety risks stemming from GE animals:

  •  Introduction of new allergens into the food system
  • Continuation of bioactive proteins after digestion
  • Creation of potentially toxic effects from novel protein expression”

The article “Clone on the Range” I found the most disturbing. This article gives a little bit of the history of cloning animals, but mainly focuses on ViaGen which is an Austin, TX based company that clones animals and holds animal DNA for future cloning. Their ambition is to be the foremost provider of cloned livestock for food. “The company claims it clones the hardiest breading stock in the industry”.

I think the people in the cloning industry truly believe this meat is safe. The owner of ViaGen has his own ranch in which he has his own batch of cloned cows from one prize winning cow. He says, “They’re just cows. A bunch of people are afraid of them being in the food chain, but they’re just cows. I wouldn’t be afraid to eat one” –Gene Bruner. Then later though in the same article Brian Bruner even admits “that his cloned cows do sometimes unnerve him”. He states, “When we go to vaccinate them, they all go to the exact same part of the chute as 248 (original cow) did. They act the same and are afraid of needles just like she was. It is kind of eerie”.

So, in conclusion, do we eat cloned meat? -Probably not because the cost to clone an animal right now is so high. However, and a BIG HOWEVER, we do probably consume a cloned animals offspring or the cloned offspring’s byproducts such as milk, butter, etc! There is also no way of knowing in the mass produced industry of meat if that meat was from a cloned animal. As I said before, cloned animal’s offspring and byproducts could have been introduced into our food sources as early as 2006. Though, you may not be eating meat that came directly from a cloned animal (though you could since there are no regulations and after the cloned animal has served its purpose for breeding it is usually slaughtered with the rest of the animals), if you don’t eat certified organic meat and byproducts, you most certainly have eaten products from a cloned animal’s offspring.

Do we really know where our food is coming from? I don’t know about you, but I was deeply disturbed after doing research on this topic. There is a whole bunch more aspects about this also concerning the more than 7 different growth hormones that are used in our meat, as well as the fact that antibiotics are overused in our meat sources as well. But, I could be writing here for days and days about the disturbing facts involved in America’s food industry.

I had watched the famous movie “Food, Inc”. Which, yes is disturbing, and yes you should watch, but not nearly as disturbing as the fact that we have no idea how much of our meat and byproducts come from cloned and genetically engineered animals.  This information certainly will spawn research into local farmers markets and the difference in pricing of organic vs. non-organic/who knows what the heck it is.

I was so moved by these articles I felt the need to share this information with you. As for me, I am now looking into local and organic options. I do not want to know what the repercussions of this will be in the next 20 years from eating these meats and byproducts.

Paying for bad choices…along with 3 dogs and a cat :)

I’m pretty sure I paid for some bad choices yesterday. I thought I did so good planning ahead last Sunday. I bought plenty of fresh vegetables, cut them up, and put them in containers to take to work. However, I’m still not where I can just pass up a free good meal..sigh.

Tuesday we had this big convention thing at work, which is why I haven’t been on here lately because I’ve been so busy. Well we ordered bbq sandwich stuff with all the fixins and sides. After the bigwigs ate their lunch there was plenty of leftovers and we common folk were told we could partake in what was left in the break room….Did I eat my cut up veggies like I had planned????!!! Um, that’d be a no! I had an openfaced sandwich with pulled pork on one side and chicken on the other, as well as a cup of beans and probably 2 cups of potato salad (the kind made with sour cream and ham). So, not only was that not very healthy choices, but that was more than a serving of pork. Which, if I haven’t mentioned every time I have bacon of any sort makes me sick. But, I thought this meat would be ok. And, granted I haven’t really had any meat other than tunafish salad in over 3 weeks (with the exception of Genghis Grill which was divine and healthy..but I digress).

So, the end effects? Bad trips to the bathroom til midnight Tues and then again Wed morning and practically no sleep for me! When people will I learn my lesson?!

  1. Lesson #1: No pork of any kind will be ingested if at all possible!!!
  2. Lesson #2: I will stick to my planned lunch!
  3. Lesson #3: Oh, yeah, NO PORK OF ANY KIND WILL BE EATEN!!!

On a positive note though, I have been eating very healthy today. And, staying on track. Now, I just need to get my booty in gear and get some cardio done! 🙂

Ok, well on a whole non food related post…I’m a complete animal lover, but if I had to choose between cats and dogs..dogs would win hands down. I’ve never had a cat because my dad was allergic. And, every time my husband would ask I’ve always said no when it comes to cats. We have 3 dogs though! I got my first dog right after we bought our house, Duke a male mini dachshund.

Then, I wanted a female companion, and I’ve always wanted a piebald. So, I got Pixie a female piebald mini dachshund.

Well, the hubby decided those are not “manly” enough dogs..so we also now have Lucy who is a lab mix and is our “guard dog” outside.

I tell you all this because yesterday afternoon it started to storm. When my hubby got home he opened the garage door to come in through that way. Well a couple of hours later it stopped raining and we decided to get out and run some errands. When we returned I opened the garage door to park my vehicle and after parking to the right in my husbands military supplies and extra uniforms was this little cat. Probaby only 6 months old. He meowed just once and stole my husband’s heart. Of course I said we needed to make sure it didn’t belong to anyone else in the neighborhood. And to no avail did anyone claim him. Of course my husband’s conscious along with my cousin who lives with us couldn’t abide letting roam around (which, ok I couldn’t either because we live close to a busy highway and I didn’t want him to get run over). So, now, I have eaten my words of sayin I will never own a cat. Because before I knew it he stole my heart, and has been named Jasper. Oh, please help me, now we have 3 dogs and a cat!!! We might as well apply for grants as an animal shelter. But here is Jasper….

So, now you see my dilemma.

Busy..Busy..Busy

Hello there folks! I promise I have not disappeared off the face of the earth! I will write out a nice long post either later today or tomorrow and update y’all on how my weekend went. And, I’ve been super busy with work. We have this big summit conference here so a bunch of corporate people are here….yikes. So, I probably shouldn’t be on here too long. But, I will let you know about the successes and failures of my weekend and I finally got my new cool pedometer toy in yesterday! I’m going to try to set it tonight and put it on tomorrow to count my steps starting in the morning. Ok, well, I’ll talk at y’all later. Hope y’all are having a great day and making healthy choices! 🙂

No Self-Sabotaging Allowed!

Ok, let me just say that today I have been in a horribly foul mood and just plain mad at the world right now. I’m tired of feeling like I’m always on the crap end of the stick! And let me just whine and say, “IT’S NOT FAIR!!!” Now that I have gotten my whining out of my system I shall move on.

It seems like every Friday I cave into my old fatty cravings for the weekend and any weight I had lost through the week I seem to gain back over the weekend! I’m tired of self-sabotaging the weekends away!

I love spending time with my mom whose one of my best friends. We usually have some kind of errands to run or a project going on and we usually eat out once or twice throughout the weekend. My usual favorites were Mexican where I would have chips, salsa, cheese dip or guacamole or both, enchiladas or quesadillas, and a margarita (ok, I’ll be honest more like 2-3 margaritas)..do you know that came up to over 1300 calories?!!! That’s crazy!

My problem is my mom is not a fan of trying new things. But, tonight I have decided she’s coming with me to Ghengis Grill which is a “build your own bowl” type of place. I’ve already gone on My Fitness Pal and added up the ingredients and it will be about 600-700 calories for a bowl with shrimp, scallops, mushrooms, squash, onion, sweet n sour sauce, on udon noodles. Oh yes, be jealous! You know that sounds amazing right now!!!Hopefully my mom will be open to this place and enjoy it..we shall see. I will probably take some pictures and post them later.

Let me be honest with myself when I get into a bad mood or when Friday rolls around, I use any excuse in the typical fat person’s book as to why I can “cheat” and have foods I know are over my calorie limit and not healthy at all. And, if I had a dime for every excuse I’m making for not exercising I would be a millionaire!

I’m not letting myself do this to me anymore! I can’t! If I want to see progress at all, I have to stop making excuses. Afterall, this isn’t a diet; this is my lifestyle now. I have to learn to always make healthier choices than the old habit me. Because, even though I’m not in the greatest mood today…the old way of eating me was seriously unhappy all the time. The old way of eating me was bordering on depressed. I don’t want to go back there. I feel so much better when I eat “clean”-no fried or processed foods. And, I don’t want to go back to that crappy feeling and have to start all over Monday morning.

There will be no regrets this next Monday morning! I am determined to  eat healthy! As the hubby says, “I have my resolved face on-this is the resolved face”. 🙂 Prepare and plan ahead is what I shall be doing from now on. I still want to enjoy my mom and me time, but it will be eating healthier foods.
